What to Expect on Your First Visit

Visiting an Orthodox church for the first time can feel like stepping into another world. Here's what to expect so you can focus on the service rather than the logistics.

1

Where to Park

Free parking in the lot off Barber Lane. Street parking is available on Barber Ln if the lot is full.

2

Which Door to Use

Enter through the main front doors. You'll step into the narthex, a small entry space with icons, candle stands, and a greeter who can hand you a service book if you'd like one. Take your time.

3

When to Arrive

Sunday Divine Liturgy begins at 10:00 AM and runs about 90 minutes. Arriving 5 to 10 minutes early gives you time to settle in, light a candle if you wish, and find a seat without rushing.

4

Where to Sit

Sit anywhere. There are no reserved pews. The back of the church is a fine place for a first visit. You can see the whole service and step out if you need to.

5

What You'll See and Hear

The service is sung from beginning to end, mostly in English. You'll smell incense, see the priest and deacon move in procession, and hear ancient prayers unchanged for over a thousand years. It can feel unfamiliar at first, and that's normal. You don't need to follow along perfectly. Just be present.

6

After the Service

Everyone is invited downstairs for fellowship and coffee around 11:30 AM. This is the easiest time to meet Fr. Mykola, ask questions, and get to know the parish. Stay as long as you'd like.

Questions before you come? Call (815) 725-4742 or send a message. Fr. Mykola is happy to talk with anyone considering a first visit.
