 ·  Tone 1
 ·  119th Year, Issue 24

Romans 2:10-16 (Epistle)
 ·
Matthew 4:18-23 (Gospel)

We gather today for the Fifth Sunday of Pascha, a day that invites us to reflect on our journey with Christ as we continue in the joy of His Resurrection. As we celebrate Holy Baptism and Chrismation for Nadzeya Spillane and Nick Notson, we remember that each of us was welcomed into the Body of Christ through the sacraments of holy baptism and chrismation, and that we are called to live as a community united in faith and love.

Today’s scriptures remind us of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, an example of God’s boundless mercy and desire for all people to come to Him. This theme is echoed in our patronal feast of Saint Nicholas, who was known for his generosity and compassion towards those in need.

We invite you to join us as we worship together today, celebrating the gift of life in Christ and the hope of eternal life that He offers us through His Resurrection. Please consider joining us on Facebook Live at facebook.com/stnicholasjoliet or YouTube at youtube.com/@st.nicholasjoliet for our live stream.

✠ Reflection on Matthew 4:18-23

As we behold Christ’s summons to the first apostles, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men," let us ponder the radical nature of His call. He invites them, not merely to a new career or vocation, but to an entirely new way of life, one that transforms their very existence from within. In leaving behind their nets and boats, Peter and Andrew, James and John demonstrate a willingness to abandon all for the sake of Christ’s kingdom. May we, too, be willing to surrender our own attachments and follow Him into the depths of His mysterious will.

kliros
— The kliros is a raised platform in an Orthodox church where the deacon or priest sings hymns during services, often accompanied by the choir. It serves as a visual reminder of the importance of music and chanting in Orthodox worship, which is considered a way to glorify God through song and prayer. The kliros is typically positioned in front of the altar and is an integral part of the traditional Orthodox liturgical setup.
